Travertine is a dense closely compacted form of limestone. It has a very old-world look that can take it from rustic to elegant. Travertine has become very popular because it has the classic look of marble but is considerably less expensive. Once sealed Travertine requires very little maintenance. It does not show scratches and always looks beautiful. However, it is a pitted, porous stone, susceptible to stains, so regular care is required to maintain its beauty and luster. Travertine can have a polished gloss or be honed with a matte finish. It can also be found with grain lines or against the grain in a cross-cut design.
